Covert, MI History
Prior to 1876, Covert was known by another name: Deerfield. Despite the name by which this township was recognized, it’s always been unique in that its residences were integrated in schools and public locations – despite the laws and practices of the rest of the country. As a matter of fact, African American men were being voted into positions such as highway construction overseers and even township board members as early as the 1860’s – a time before African Americans were even granted the freedom to vote!
