La Porte began as a small settlement in 1832 where Abraham P. Andrew built the first sawmill. The first cabin that was constructed by the first settler would eventually become the Courthouse square. Federal land designation was a vital aspect of the colonization of the United States, and a Federal Land Office was constructed in La Porte in 1833, prompting the rapid growth of the settlement for which it was incorporated as a town in 1835.
During the subsequent decade a newspaper was formed, the La Porte Medical School was constructed, and various industrial outlets were created. By the beginning of the 1850’s the town was inhabited by over 5,000 residents.
