Ludington, MI History
The city of Ludington was first settled in 1847 by the family of Burr Caswell (2 years after he initially visited for fishing and trapping) and was originally called Père Marquette because of its position on the mouth of the Père Marquette River. After settling into their new farm in this prime spot on the river they constructed a 2 story house – the first story of which would become the first courthouse in the county when Mason County was organized in 1855.
During the expansion of the city, James Ludington’s logging enterprise became the heart of its growth. As such, the city was renamed and became incorporated as the City of Ludington in 1873.
