Macatawa was part of the entire Laketown area which was recognized by the Dutch in the 1840’s as a valuable location for a harbor because of its position between Lake Macatawa and Lake Michigan. In 1849, surveys began to be conducted to determine the best possible locations to dig a channel and develop land. There were a number of challenges to the original channel and successful development wouldn’t take place until the 1870’s. Macatawa was platted in 1881 and soon became home to its first hotel.

Due to a series of fires in the early 1900’s, however, many of the hotels were destroyed and were replaced by cottages and vacation houses for sale on Lake Michigan.
