Near 1850 a judge in Ohio by the name of Silas Sawyer decided to retire his career on the bench and take part of the expansion of the country by joining the migration to the west. Sawyer purchased 100 acres of land, cleared away the forests, and replaced the forest trees with various fruit trees. Because of the fertile soil and abundant forests, the settlement quickly began to grow with agriculture and timber as its primary revenue sources.
