Spring Lake, MI History
Spring Lake was once known as Hopkins Mill. This name was given to the area because its original settler, Cpt. Benjamin Hopkins constructed a mill after acquiring the property. The town continued to develop and received a post office in 1851. The name was changed in 1867 to Spring Lake, and it was incorporated as a village in 1869.
