The region was first encountered by explorers in 1669 but wasn’t permanently settled until 1780 at the time a food and fur trading post was established. It still wasn’t until 1829 that the area was regarded as a village, which was then known as Newburyport; and it was another 5 years before it would be incorporated as St. Joseph, the city. In 1894, the city was voted in as county seat of Berrien County.
