Union Pier, MI History
The first settler, John Gowdy, arrived here from New York in 1861 and was met by dense forest. Recognizing the close proximity to developing Chicago and the financial windfall to be gained from providing lumber to build the city, Mr. Gowdy and other motivated individuals from New York set out on the tumultuous task of clearing away the forest to construct a lumber mill capable of processing the abundant source of lumber.
Equally important as the lumber mill was the method by which processed building materials would be exported to Chicago. In order to ship their supply of lumber the motivated settlers built the Union Pier (which has since been washed away by Lake Michigan tides) which would load the ships and provide capital the settlement needed to grow.
